Last Saturday’s event was a single stroke played for the Laurie Newley Memorial Trophy sponsored by the Newley family. Laurie Newley was a greenkeeper at the golf club in his day and a keen member of the golf club. The club thanks the Newley family for sponsoring this day as it gives present members and insight into part of the history of the golf club and the course.

Some tricky pin positions gave players something else to think and a putting competition would have produced some interesting results. No problem to Brendon Barker who played a par round of 72 and a nett 70 to take the main prize. Another low marker, David Burgess, fired a 76 off the stick for nett 72 and take runner up.

Lorraine Evans had the best result for the ladies and her nett 73 took first place, one shot ahead of runner up, Neta Thouard. Kay Webb and Lyn Ludlow featured in the ladies run down, both on nett 76.

The men’s run down included Eric McLellan, Rod Werner and Keith Barnett all with nett 75. Scott Constable rarely misses out in being included in the news, this time for scoring an eagle at the par 4 9th hole. Reportedly, his drive was well down the fairway and was followed by an easy wedge shot which finished in the hole. Obviously, the best way not to have many putts on a hole is simply to hole out from the fairway.

Next Saturday is another memorial day, Canadian Foursomes for the Peter Howard Memorial. The day will be a shot gun start at 11.45 am with registration to be completed 20 minutes prior, allowing the starter enough time to assign starting tee positions. For those who have forgotten this format, the starter will explain prior to play next Saturday. The time sheet is on display at the club and it is important that partners are arranged as it is not possible for singles to compete in the event.
